 | (1) Post 3282 Commander 2007 - 2008 Al Burley ALBERT T. BURLEY
Al was born in Rochester, New York in 1937. In 1953 he joined the U. S. Army and took basic training in Fort Dix, New Jersey. He went on to Advanced Infantry Training at Fort Bragg, North Carolina and also completed Airborne Jump School Training. Al joined the Special Forces (The Green Berets) in 1964 and for the next eleven years served with the 5th Special Forces Group in Vietnan, the 7th Special Forces Group at Fort Bragg, N C, the Dominican Republic, and Panama. He also served with the 10th Special Forces Group in Germany and Fort Devens, Mass. Areas of combat service include Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic (1965) and two tours in Vietnan (1965 – 1966) & (1970 – 1971).
Al’s decorations include Bronze Star w/ Oak Leaf Cluster, Meritorious Service Medal, Air medal, Army Commendation Medal w/ Oak Leaf Cluster, Combat Infantry Badge, Master Parachutist and numerous Unit and Presidential Unit Commendations.
After retiring from the service in 1975, Al moved to Phoenix, Arizona. There he attended flight school to obtain a pilot’s license and a helicopter license as well. He went on to become a Flight Instructor and logged in over 1000 hours of flight time.
While in Arizona he also began a career a cable television design and construction. In 1983 he was transferred to Rhode Island as the East Coast Construction Manager. There he met and married his wife, Evelyn. They moved to Florida in 1987 where Al continued his career in cable as a Design Engineer.
Upon his arrival in Florida in 1987, Al joined the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 3282, Port Orange, Florida. He was elected Commander of the Post in 1990 – 1991 and earned the titles of All State and All American Commander. In 1992 he was elected Commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Florida District 19, and in 1993-94 served as Veterans of Foreign Wars National Aide-de-Camp.
Al has again been elected to serve as Post 3282 Commander for the year 2007 – 2008.
After twenty-two years with the cable company, Al retired to join the Florida lifestyle of traveling, fishing, and gardening and continues serving veterans and the community through the extensive Community Service and Veterans programs of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
